As Youth Speak Collective‘s Communications Intern from July 2015 to May 2016, I curated Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook posts that coincided with the organization’s mission to, “empower low-income, at-risk youth and their families with the skills necessary to pursue higher education and create strong communities.” A youth-driven non-profit organization, Youth Speak is committed to providing youth with the opportunity to “speak up” and be heard, by providing students throughout the Northeast San Fernando Valley with “creative, high-quality programs that channel their intellect and talent, build their academic skills, and strengthen their investment in their own communities.”
As the Communications Intern, along with the help of program facilitators, I helped increase their Twitter following by about 1,000+ followers, Instagram by about 100+, and their Facebook likes by about 100+. I curated posts with photos edited/taken by myself, past photos stored on Flickr, or photos provided by program facilitators of events Youth Speak students were participating in or hosting. These events included YSC’s annual fundraising gala “Celebrate our Leaders of the Northeast San Fernando Valley,” YSC’s First Step College Tour, YSC Creative Arts Mural Celebration and Art Show, along with many other events in the community. On Facebook and Twitter, I focused on mainly posting relevant quotes to motivate our youth followers, announce YSC or community events free to the youth and their families, or simply post relevant articles found online such as scholarship opportunities.
